Understanding the Natural World

All classes have had the opportunities to carry out first hand investigations and record their observations. The children have then been supported to draw conclusions from their research.

Signs of Seasons with Reception

In Reception the children have been talking about the changing season and looking for signs of spring. The children have looked around the outdoor area for signs of spring and then taken pictures to evidence what they have observed and then to further discuss their observations. The children have been encouraged to draw their own pictures of what they have found!

Animal Habitats with Year 2

Children in Year 2 have been learning all about animals and habitats. The children went on a minibeast hunt around the playground to investigate a range of microhabitats and to see what animals live in each one. They were then able to collate this information in a table which they then shared with the rest of the class. Following this this discussed how habitats would be different if one factor was to change.

Melting Points with Year 4

This picture shows the work of a Year 4 child who has learnt about melting temperatures as part of Changing State. They have used this knowledge to devise an investigation to answer the scientific enquiry about which of a number of foods will melt the quickest.

They were able to record their observations in a video and also using a table.

Natural Selection with Year 6

The children in Year 6 looked at natural selection and created their own investigation of what happens to birds with different beaks and how some birds will become extinct if they do not naturally evolve over thousands of years.
