We are delighted to have taken part in sports competitions!

Sports Day in EYFS

EYFS have been working hard in P.E to learn the skills needed to take part and compete in sports day events. This has included practicing starting a sprinting race, passing a relay baton to their team members and running with an egg and spoon. They have also learnt how to perform a standing long jump and throw a bean bag in the style of a shot put. EYFS have enjoyed competing against their class and are now looking forward to putting their skills forward to compete against the other EYFS classes for their sports day.

Multi-Sports in KS1

Year 1 and 2 children took part in a Cluster Schools Multi-Sports competition which we hosted here at Heronsgate. We had 10 brilliant year 6 sports leaders who helped to support and run the event. The children went round 5 activity stations including, javelin, long jump, bean bag relay, throwing a bean bag into a hoop and a hockey dribbling relay. They gathered points for their school and then took part in sprinting and a big relay race! 1st Place = Hawksmoor. 2nd Place = Discovery. 3rd Place = Windrush. 4th Place = Heronsgate. 5th Place = St Margaret Clitherow. The children were fantastic and enjoyed competing for Heronsgate!

Platform Cricket in Year 4

In the grounds of The Academy, Woolwich Common, an 8-strong team of Year 4 Heronsgate cricket aces faced off against school teams from across the borough. The competition was close and intense with points being won and lost with runs, runouts, bowls and mis-bowls. With each game played, awareness grew, along with communication and skills. In game one, we were out-batted by Windrush. In game two, we were out-bowled by St Mary’s D. Game three against St Mary’s G was very close. We finally won game four against St Margaret’s A with some sensational batting and fielding.

Every one of our team members were winners, having improved gameplay and scoring, having enjoyed themselves hugely, and having represented the school with tremendous sportsmanship.

Year 5 and 6 Tag Rugby

Children from Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to attend a tag rugby tournament hosted by Year 9 pupils at Woolwich Poly Girls secondary school. They played against 2 other primary schools: Hawksmoor and St Margaret Clitherow. The children were able to put the rugby skills they have learnt in PE lessons into action on the field. The teachers supporting the event were impressed by the children’s sportsmanship and skill and even though they came third, they had a brilliant time!
