Research and Development

A Heronsgate DT student has an increasing knowledge of the key principles of design technology. Through investigations, pupils are constantly considering and reflecting upon the DT principles of design. They think about how the user, function and purpose has impacted the use, aesthetic and design of the product.

Structural Stability - Reception

In Reception, children have been developing their practical skills and techniques with construction kits. They developed their fine motor skills and designing skills by learning  how to make their towers more stable by widening the base. Staff supported children to use key vocabulary such as balance, structure, stable, widen.

Spinning the Wheels - Year 2

In Year 2’s mechanism topic,  the children were exploring how to make a moving vehicle for their character ‘Traction Man’. They investigated and used wheels, axles and axle holders and were able to distinguish between fixed and freely moving axles. They developed many practical skills such as how to mark out, hold, cut and join materials and components together correctly.

Designing and Creating Shelters - Year 4

In Year 4, the children are designing and making a shelter for an expedition in the UK countryside. They investigated different nets of shelters which helped them make their design criteria for their tent, focusing on the needs of the user and the purpose of the product. They thought about the dimensions, developed annotated sketches and made a prototype.

Alarm Research and Development - Year 5

In Year 5, children have been investigating and researching about various alarm devices. They explored a range of electrical circuits and switches to help them develop a design specification for their product, carefully considering the purpose and needs of the intended user.
