Happy Rhythms

We endeavour to ensure coverage and progression of skills in all aspects of the music curriculum from EYFS – Y6. We also seek to evaluate the use of how musical vocabulary is used across the curriculum and is consistent through the school.

Preparing for Performance - Reception

In Reception we have been learning songs for our Christmas performance. We listen carefully to the tune and melody before learning the words one line at a time. We then put the whole together thinking about how it should be performed. For example loud and enthusiastic or quiet and calm.

Analysing Bolero and Rhythms - Year 2

In Year 2, we explored the music of Ravel, in particular Bolero. We listened carefully to the piece of music and drew the different rhythms that we could hear. Then we created our own composition in the style of Bolero.

Storyboarding to John William’s Works - Year 3

In Year 3, children have been learning about film music and composing a theme in the style of John Williams to match a video excerpt of Jurassic Park. The picture shows listening activities where children listened to different pieces by the composer and then creating a graphic score to show the features of the music.

Gustav Holst and Percussion Practice- Year 5

Last half term, Year 5 learned about Gustav Holst and listened to ‘Mars’ from the suite of music ‘The Planets’. We learned the rhythms of 3 different ostinatos from this piece ending with children working in groups to play these layered over each other on different percussion instruments.
