Numbers Up to a Million

A Heronsgate Mathematician is fluent in the fundamentals of maths through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time. They can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. A Heronsgate Mathematician can solve problems by applying their maths to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication.

Number Bonds - Reception

Reception children have been learning about numbers to 4. The children have been making 4 in different ways to develop their understanding of number bonds. This supports their concept of cardinality and that 4 can be represented in different ways.

Mastering the Base of Base 10 - Year 1

In Year 1 the children were able to order numbers backwards using their place value knowledge, resources and representations to support them. They understood that the number before was one less than that number.

Kilos Worth of Place Values - Year 3

Children in Year 3 have extended their knowledge of place value by looking at numbers up to 1000. They started by counting in hundreds, tens and ones before comparing and ordering numbers with 3 digits. A key learning point is using a 0 as a place holder in the tens column for numbers such as 803.

Almost Emily - Year 5

In Year 5 the children have been using their place value knowledge to understand how 6 digit numbers are composed. They used the Gattegno Chart to partition the number into parts and then they wrote a number equation to show the composition of the number.
