Multiplying the Fun!

We are proud to show our excellent understanding of multiplication and division across the school. Children move from learning the concept of sharing equally, to tactile resources, to applying this to abstract written methods to solve division problems. Alongside this, children are introduced to the concept of repeated addition, which they are then able to recognise as multiplication. This leads them to be able to give the product or identify the multiplication equation for a product. This culminates in Year 6 children being able to solve multiplication and division questions independently.

Maths You Can Munch - Nursery

In Nursery, the children have been learning about the early concept of division by sharing their resources, such as fruit and playdough!

Add it up, again, again, again! - Year 2

In Year 2, children have been using repeated addition to begin their understanding of multiplication. They were then able to use language such as ‘lots of’ and ‘multiplied by’ to help them to understand the meaning of a multiplication equation.

Divide and conquer - Year 4

In Year 4, the children are introduced to written division through the use of grouping place value counters. The children can then use this method to support their calculations as they move towards a more abstract, efficient written method.

See it, Say it, Solve it - Year 6

In Year 6, children learned to recognise mathematical language associated with multiplication and division to help them identify which skill was required to solve a range of word problems using the appropriate method.
