Map your way!

Below are examples of the development of children’s Place Knowledge this term.

We aim to nourish the children’s understanding of similarities and differences of places in the local area, the UK and beyond to globally significant places. This is leading to a ‘sense of place’ that they will acquire after year 6.

Different but the Same - Reception

In Reception, we have been reading the book All Are Welcome. We discussed how we have different traditions to each other, based on where in the world we come from. We spoke about the environment we live in and whether it is a town, city or countryside. We compared images of these places. We also discussed what homes and schools are like in different countries. We liked learning about different places and talking about similarities and differences in our class.

Aerial Geographic Photography - Year 2

Year 2 found out what an aerial photograph is and looked at a selection of them showing different places in the UK. We thought about when an aerial photograph would be useful. We analysed the photos and labelled the human and physical features that we could see. In this way, we developed our place knowledge of the four countries of the UK.

Human Habitation - Year 3

In Year 3, we have learnt about how the human and physical characteristics of a place are connected and make it special. We learnt that some places have important features that make it suitable for settlement and why other places would be unsuitable as a place to live.

Mountain Ranges on Maps - Year 6

Year 6 have begun to locate mountain ranges using a range of maps in the UK and the World and that they often display similar features due to their elevation, such as typical climates and  land features. They have also learnt how humans impact these places through tourism both positively and negatively. They used a range of maps to identify mountainous locations.
