Rhyme and Shine

This term the English team successfully engaged children with reading through a fantastic book week. During the week classes were visited by a poet, Chris White and were invited to showcase and perform a poem in front of parents and their peers. This also links to our oracy intent as children had the opportunity to speak clearly, confidently and with expression.

Flyleaf - Nursery

In Nursery, the children are learning to look at books with care, identify the front of the book and to start to turn one page at a time. Furthermore, they are using the pictures to start to tell the story or gather meaning. We have popular culture books as well as catalogues out in and around the classroom. This is to try and entice children to handle books and look at print and mostly to develop an early love of reading.

Budding Poets - Year 1

In Year 1 we are practicing reading books linked to the sounds we have learnt and understood. We first of all decode a book, then we practiced reading it with expression and then finally we answered questions about the book we have read. Additionally we participated in a poetry showcase in which we performed our poems clearly and confidently for the adults who attended. Also, some of us handed in work for the writing competition which involved poetry.

A Visit From Poet Chris White - Year 3

Year 3 had a spectacular visit from a poet and illustrator Chris White. He was able to ignite their imaginations and create a brand new animal! The class shared ideas and were able to draw the animal together. The artwork was truly amazing! They then created a shared nonsense poem that focused on rhyming. The children were captivated from the beginning until the end!

Our Outstanding Orates - Year 6

Year Six had the opportunity to perform in a poetry showcase competition. During book week, they explored different poems and chose one that they enjoyed as a class - some even used chat gpt to create their own about life in Heronsgate! They had fun practicing their performance by exploring different ways they could express themselves. They then performed their poem to the whole school using their oracy skills of speaking confidently and thinking about the rhythm as well as tone and expression. The winning class was given three new books for their book corner!
