Musical Diversity

A Heronsgate Historian has a secure knowledge of the periods studied and how they fit together chronologically. They pose historical questions and investigate these, selecting and evaluating relevant sources to draw conclusions and gain an informed perspective on their world.

World Music and Performance in Reception

In Reception the children have been listening to and exploring music from different cultures, as well as known nursery rhymes and familiar songs. The pupils have experimented with performing musical pieces to an audience. They focused on the rhythm of the music and keeping the beat.

Music of the Caribbean in Year 1

Year One have been exploring the role of diversity within music and working together to perform a Caribbean song. The children have been celebrating composers from all over the world performing music linked to their geography unit to perform later in the year.

Anna Meredith and Motifs in Year 3

Year 3 have studied the music of contemporary composer Anna Meredith who creates music without instruments. Using voice and body percussion, the children have learnt and followed the movement motifs from ‘Connect It’ and then composed their own motifs using ideas from the sounds made with their mouths and bodies along with movements to create a musical dance.

Florence Price and Music Structure in Year 5

Children in Year 5 have been studying the composer Florence Price. In this unit, the children learn about musical structures including rondo form and ending a piece with a coda. They use instruments to create a repeating ostinato which they then build on to create a final piece influenced by Price’s Symphony No. 1.
