Measurement in Maths

The pictures show our incredible understanding of measurement. In Reception the children begin to explore the language related to measurement and this leads on to in KS1 where they begin to apply that language to compare, describe and order different measurements. As the children move up the school, with the help of small steps, they build their confidence to apply their knowledge of measurement to a range of problems.

Non-standard Measurements in Reception

In Reception the children are learning to use non- standard measure to find out the length of images. They are exploring the mathematical language related to measurement, in this case length and they were able to complete the task accurately. The child has recognised what measuring length looks like when using imagery.

Centimetres in Year 1

In Year 1, the children are learning to use centimetres to measure lengths. They then used this knowledge to help them to reason and compare the lengths of ribbons. This child was able to give an appropriate answer based on the information they were given.

Perimeters in Year 4

In Year 4, the children were learning to measure the perimeter of a rectangle. Within this piece of work the children are focusing on calculating the perimeters of rectangles using side length rather than counting squares. This piece of learning showcases how small steps help children progress within a lesson.

Capacity Problems in Year 6

In Year 6, the children have been learning to solve problems involving capacity. This required children to apply their knowledge of conversions to solve a range of problems such as ordering, comparing, reasoning and also included multi- step problems. The children also draw on their knowledge of fractions and decimals to help support their learning.
