Exploration Through Geography

The development of children’s locational knowledge this term is identified below (where a place is, what it is like (physical and human characteristics), and what makes that place unique and special). This helps to support our geographical intent of cultivating their sense of wonder of the beauty and variety of the world.

Plotting Paths in Nursery

This picture shows how in Nursery the children started to map different areas in our playground using coloured yarn. By doing this they were able to physically link different known places and show linear routes.

Connecting Senses and Environment in Year 1

This picture shows how the Year 1 children recorded their observations of the school environment based on their senses, helping them to focus on what their local area is like as a place and notice the details. It was followed by discussions about what is special and unique about our school and why we like it here. This led to discussions about how we can look after this unique and special place.

Geographical Features with Year 4

This picture shows the work of a Year 4 child who has used an atlas to identify the geographical features of the UK regions and counties particularly of Cumbria and Greater London. They have used a topographical key on a physical map to identify areas of mountain and lower lying land. They have also studied climate graphs and compared and contrasted these regions, drawing conclusions as to why people enjoy being in those places and want to look after them.

Biomes in Year 5

This picture shows the work of a child in Year 5 who has been  learning about the world's different land biomes. They have researched their location, climate, seasons, flora and fauna adaptations to survive there. They then decided on a place they would like to visit; what equipment they would need and what animals and plants they might see. In this way they developed their sense of wonder at the variety of the world.
