Design in DT

In D&T, the design lessons enable pupils to carefully consider the user and purpose of the product. These lessons allow children to think about how the product will function/ look like and how different elements come together.  Within this lesson they think about the materials and resources they’ll need and come up with a design criteria which they’ll have to evaluate when they have created their finished product.

Building in Nursery

In Nursery children have been exploring how to build transient wooden structures using blocks and planks. They worked together and showed a particular interest in trying to design and create a structure that was stable. They then demolished and rebuilt it as part of the design process to make sure it was stable.

Designing Boats in Year 2

In Year 2 children made boats as part of their ocean explorers project. During the design lesson pupils used the investigation lesson to ensure that their boat was made out of a material that could float and was able to travel across the water. They also labeled their design thinking about where the materials were going and how they would be connected together whilst always considering the user, purpose and function of the product.

Designing Bread in Year 3

In Year 3, this child has used their investigation lesson to help them design their own bread product. The child has thought about what the bread will look like and how it will be represented e.g twist, plaits shapes. As part of the design process the child was able to label their design showing what shape, pattern and technique they would be using. The child also thought about what ingredients will go into their product.

Considering Designs in Year 6

In Year 6, the child used their investigation lesson to help them think about the design for their own final product. The child thought about the different aspects of the bag e.g. its durability, purpose and suitability. In the design lesson the child carefully considered the measurements of the bag and how the bag would be worn by the user. In their design they are able to explain what materials they are using and identify where this will go on the product and how.
