Implementing the Scientific Method

We want a Heronsgate scientists to explore the world around them, be able to ask and answer questions by using their scientific enquiry skills and to be able to evaluate and present their conclusions clearly and accurately.

Using Senses and Examining Seeds in Nursery

In Nursery children have been looking at seeds and then  observing what happens to them after being placed on wet tissues. The children were encouraged to use their senses to observe change and record what they had seen over time on the class Ipads.

Checking a Beanstalk in Year 1

In Year one the children were also looking at growth. They were able to observe and record what had changed to a bean over time. The children were all given the same instructions to follow and were able to observe their own plant  as well as others bean plants which were put up on the class windows.

Femur Length and Jump Distance in Year 3

The children in Year 3 have also been looking at plants and seeds. However they were investigating how different conditions would affect the growth of a plant.

Children also used their scientific skills to carry out another investigation this time based on the following question: Does the length of your femur effect how far you can jump? The children made sure it was a fair test making sure each person had the same starting point to jump from then measured how far they travelled. They were then able to interpret their data to help answer their investigation question.

Solvent Dissolution in Water by Temperature in Year 5

Year 5 have been carrying out fair tests to investigate how the temperature of water will affect how quickly a solvent will dissolve. The were able to conduct their own tests and collated their data in tables before writing up their own 4 art conclusions.
