Wider Opportunities in English

At Heronsgate, our curriculum extends beyond the National Curriculum and includes a wide range of enriching experiences and opportunities both within and beyond the school day. This includes after-school clubs and exciting in school activities and competitions that support the core curriculum offer.

Creative Writing Club in Reception

In Reception, we have been working very hard to help the children to develop their interest in writing and to improve their writing skills. In an effort to achieve these goals, the children were offered the opportunity to take part in a Creative Writing Club at the Thamesmead campus. The club was very successful – the children enjoyed creating different craft items and writing about them.

Spelling Challenges in Years 1-6

All the children from Year 1 to 6 were asked to complete a spelling challenges grid to encourage them to learn the words from the Key Stage statutory lists. Year 2 were enthused about the activities, which included using technology, building word pyramids and making up jokes using their spelling words.

Annual Spelling Bee Competition

In our annual spelling bee competition, the children worked really hard to practise spellings and competed against one another to see who could get the most correct - some even went to a sudden death round! They were so motivated and also showed great sportsmanship, cheering each other on and congratulating all of the winners.

Year 5 Take the Stage

This summer, some brilliant actors from Year 5 took to the stage at the Albany Theatre in Deptford to perform their exciting interpretation of Romeo and Juliet as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival which takes place nationwide. The children had been working hard since November to put on this famous play; grappling with Shakespeare's language as well as learning to speak with confidence and work in a team. They received rave reviews from the parents who came to watch. Well done Year 5!
