Sources in History

The development of the children’s understanding of the use of sources in history (primary, secondary and artefacts).

Through the teaching of age-appropriate key vocabulary, children are able to discuss the sources studied in progressive detail reflecting on the historical information they provide and the reliability of it.

Reflecting on personal history and connections Nursery

This picture shows a nursery child using a secondary source in their topic of ‘All about me.’ They have used it to help them reflect about family, ourselves and people who are special to us. The child has started to notice that we are not all the same; there are adults, children and babies. They have also started to understand that we learn and change as we grow. For example many of the children have realised they can use the toilet now and no longer/mostly do not need to use nappies.

Artefact Examination: exploring their uses and story in Year 1

This picture shows the work of a Year 1 child who has looked at a variety of artefacts and discussed what they think the objects are and what they might be used for. They participated in a discussion about how artefacts are used when learning about the past and left focussed voice notes to record their learning.

Contrasting Modern and Edwardian life, in Year 4

This picture shows the work of a Year 4 child who has ‘jumped into’ the primary source of a photograph and imagined what it was like to be an Edwardian child in comparison with nowadays. They acted it out and wrote notes about what it would be like in that classroom and why. This generated observations as well as further questions for discussion.

Types of sources, and historical media techniques in Year 6

This picture shows the work of a Year 6 child, who looked at primary sources of evidence (photographs of evacuee children) from that time period and explored how useful is this source of information. They also discussed the meaning of propaganda and how that was used to try and keep the country's spirit alive and help the country win the war.
