Singing across the School in Music

The pictures show how the children have experienced singing across the school. There have been a range of different opportunities for them sing in class and in front of an audience. Skills have been developed including singing in time and in tune, singing in parts and harmonies and singing different parts on top of each other. The children have performed in front of their class, the rest of the school, visitors to the school and larger audience. It is encouraging to see children more confident in singing at all ages.

Singing together in Reception

In Reception children have been learning to sing in small groups. They have concentrated on keeping together and used instruments to keep the beat of the song throughout. Through watching the teacher lead the song, they have become familiar to simple conductor signals to show when to start, stop or repeat a section of the song.

40th Anniversary Singing in KS1

Year 1 and 2 children learnt 3 songs to perform at the school’s 40th anniversary celebration. The performed without word sheets and joined a choir with children from KS2. The older children were singing harmony parts while KS1 children were concentrating on confidently keeping their own melody line secure throughout the songs. They kept in time, started together on the first word and learnt important musicianship skills about ensemble performances.

Singing in Parts in Year 4

Year 4 children have been learning multi-part songs. These are 3 verse songs that are sung separately and then all together at the end. Each verse has different words, actions, melodies, rhythms and dynamics which they all learn. During the performance, each group sings their own verse then again (as verses 4 and 5) while the other groups are singing their own parts at the same time. These have been performed in assembly and children have enjoyed overcoming their nerves to sing challenging songs in front of a supportive audience.

Year 5 singing at Young Voices

In year 5, the children had the opportunity to sing as part of a choir of 7000 children at the O2. At the Young Voices concert, they sang a range of songs in different styles and languages incorporating the skills they have developed in their music lessons. They confidently sang their parts and words while other sections of the choir sang different melodies. They could maintain the rhythm and tune of the songs in time with the conductor and sang with great control of voice.
