Healthy Body, Healthy Mind in PSHE

During Spring 2, the children learned how to stay healthy by looking at their diet, oral health, hygiene, medicine/drugs and mental health.

Healthy Lifestyles in Reception

Reception learnt about healthy lifestyles through discussion. They understand that some foods are healthier than others. They are able to identify different fruits and vegetables. Children also understand that exercise keeps us healthy.

Reading Food Labels in Year 2

Year 2 learned how to read food labels so that they can make informed decisions about healthy eating. They found out the daily recommended amounts of fat, salt and sugar. They guessed the amounts of each in a variety of foods and then read the labels to see if they were accurate. This helped them to understand that some foods are considered healthy but actually are not.

Learning about Effects of Alcohol in Year 4

Year 4 learned about the effects of alcohol on the body, the risks of drinking alcohol, who can drink alcohol and when. The children discussed their opinions about alcohol and decided whether or not they strongly agreed/disagreed or were unsure about the opinion. Having learned the facts about alcohol they then discussed whether or not they had changed their minds about any of the statements. They then produced a poster explaining the effects of alcohol on the body.

Calories in Year 6

Year 6 investigated the dangers of having too few or too many calories. They found out the optimal amount of calories for a variety of groups based on sex, age and how active they are. They also discovered that some calories are better than others such as those from slow release carbs as opposed to sugar. They then had to be healthy eating consultants and respond to a chosen need such as a marathon runner, a woman gaining weight feeling sluggish and a teenager considering an 800 calorie a day diet. They looked at different scenarios and left voice notes gave advice on what makes a healthy diet.
