Formulating Ideas in DT

In D&T, the investigation lessons help children formulate ideas to use in their own design and making process. These lessons allow children to explore different types of products and give them the opportunity to think about the purpose of the product, how they are made and what they need to include for their product to make it suitable for the intended user.

Construction in Reception

In Reception children have been constructing and building using blocks. In this picture children worked together to construct a tower. In line with the Early Years Framework the construction area has enabled children to create and think critically to devlop their own ideas and overcome any problems.

Investigating Fruit in Year 1

In Year 1 the D&T topic was healthy fruit kebabs. During the investigation lesson pupils explored and tasted lots of different fruit. They were able to describe its colour, texture and taste. This enabled the children to consider the most suitable fruit for the user and prupose.

Alarm Systems in Year 4

In Year 4 for the investigation lesson the children looked at different alarm systems and how they worked. Exlporing the different options and thinking about how they worked gave children opportunity to think about what type of alarm they would make to help protect endenagered animals. Having key questions helped children consider the purpose of the different alarm systems and how they would be used by the user.

Investigating Snack Bars in Year 5

In Year 5, for the investigation lesson, children looked at different types of snack bars. The children tasted the bars and rated each one. They then checked the nutritional value of the bars and the ingredients and discussed which bar was healthy and why. From this lesson the children then went on to research a healthy diet. The investigation lesson allowed the children to sample different bars and think about healthy options they would use for their own cereal bar making sure they thought about the user and purpose of the product.
