Practical Explorations in Science

The photographs celebrate how we make science engaging and interesting for all our students by providing for them lots of first hand and practical opportunities to explore a topic. We have found that our practical activities really support the development of scientific enquiry skills and love for the subject.

Snails in Nursery

In Nursery, children have been learning about snails, and what they need to survive. They have also developed their observation skills by looking closely at the snails along with using their other senses, such as touch, to help describe some of their features. The children have also started to plan and make habitats for the snails to live in.

Sprouting Beans in Year 1

In Year 1 children have been learning all about plants. They have carried out planting beans and then observing them over time to see how the bean changes from a seed as it grows. Each week they commented on changes they observed along with recognising different parts of the plant as it grew, for example to roots and stem.

Identifying Rocks in Year 3

Year 3 children have been learning about rocks and soil. Children have been able to identify and group different types of rock and show an understanding of how different rock types are formed. They have also carried out fair testing to see how rocks properties change along with carrying out research based on Mary Anning.

Investigating Dissolving in Year 5

In Year 5 children have been looking at materials and their properties. They have carried out investigations looking at if the amount of solutes impact how much it will dissolve. Children planned their experiment looking at the different variables and made predictions before carrying out the experiment.
