Locational Knowledge in Geography

These pictures show our fantastic understanding of locational knowledge. Our children start with the locational knowledge of our school and the local area and then move onto looking at international countries.

Our Local Community in Reception

In Reception, we explored maps of the local area. We then used the features of maps to draw and label maps of our classroom and playground.

Wonderful Woolwich in Year 1

We began by studying maps of the local area. We then went on a trip around the local area. We identified the and physical features and discussed what we liked and dint like about them. We thought about how we could make the local area better.

Somewhere to Settle in Year 3

In the topic Somewhere to Settle, Year 3 used pairs of satellite and map images of city, town and village locations in order to compare their land use. Children used our own agreed symbols to show the following areas of land use: business, industrial, retail, agriculture, leisure and residential.

Brilliant Biomes in Year 5

Year 5 investigated the world's biomes. We discovered that a biome is a region of the world with similar climates. We saw the planet is divided into lines of longitude and latitude and how these lines determine the type of climate you experience. We then chose a biome to research and decide what we would need to take and wear in order to survive in that biome. Finally, we researched the problems our biome faces due to climate change and ways we can prevent any further damage to those ecosystems.
