‘Highly Commended’ entry in Mayoral Competition
Heronsgate Primary School has been named Greenwich borough’s ‘Highly Commended’ entry in a challenge run by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, in which pupils were asked to design posters that explain what clean air means to them, and what their school is doing to tackle air pollution.
Around 4,000 Londoners die prematurely each year due to air pollution, and tackling the capital’s toxic air is a top priority for the Mayor. 83 schools across London took part in Sadiq’s challenge to celebrate Clean Air Day on 15th June, with more than 630 school children between the ages of 4 and 14 designing posters explaining ‘What Clean Air Means to Me’.
Co-ordinated by Global Action Plan, Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest air pollution campaign, highlighting the dangers of toxic air and raising awareness of what steps schools, business and communities can take to help achieve clean and healthy air for everyone.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said:
“Cleaning up London’s air is one of my top priorities and I want everyone to be aware of the devastating effects of air pollution. Everyone needs to join the fight, which is why I called for school children to get involved in my Clean Air Day challenge. I have been overwhelmed by the number of entries received and the creativity of the poster designs. It’s clear how passionate young Londoners are in leading the charge for reducing our city’s air pollution, and it’s great to see the steps schools are taking to make a difference in their local communities as we work to build a greener city for all Londoners.”
The challenge was open throughout May 2023, and 10 winning designs were selected. These will be featured on posters across London and shared on the Mayor of London’s social media channels.
