Continuity and Change

The development of the children’s understanding of historical concept of Continuity and Change is shown below. They have looked at the differences between then and now and begun to discuss the reasons for this.

Our Local Area, Then and Now, in Reception

This picture shows the resources children in Reception looked at and discussed as they continued to make observations about the local area for the theme of ‘Altogether Now’. They began to explore similarities and differences of how the area has changed over time. We looked at photographs of Woolwich and Heronsgate from the past and then used Google Maps to look at how the area is now.

Suffragettes in Year 2

This picture shows the work of a Year 2 child during their 'Stand Up For Your Rights' topic. During the lesson, the child found out what life was like for a woman before the Suffragette Movement. Then they discussed what impact the Suffragette Movement had on the lives of woman. They sorted statements into what life was like for women before the movement and what life is like now.

Woolwich Dockyards in Year 3

Children in Year 3 studied a local History unit about Woolwich Dockyards. They used maps from 1744 and 1877 to compare what had changed in the dockyards over time. Children were able to identify more buildings that were added in the 1877 map such as the gun yard and carriage department that were added in later years- as the dockyards developed because of wars with France from building royal ships to building military ships.

Anglo Saxons in Year 5

This picture shows the work of a Year 5 child using evidence to help them decide the reasons for the Anglo-Saxons coming to settle in Britain as it changed from a post Roman country to an Anglo Saxon one. They then ordered the evidence into which factors they thought were the most likely reasons and decided whether or not they thought it had been an invasion or a mass migration.
