Spelling in English

Spelling has been a focus during the summer term. The children enjoyed a kick-start to the spelling bee with a carousel of fun learning activities. They were given a series of spelling challenges to complete at home and there was a high level of engagement from the children. The various events culminated in the Great Heronsgate Spelling Bee which all children competed in. The top spellers in UKS2 even head to head with schools in our cluster and placed third in the competition.

CVC Frames in EYFS

In Early Years, the children have been using CVC frames with magnetic letters to spell simple words. The children segment the sounds in the word and identify which letter they need and in which order to spell the word correctly.

Spelling Challenges in Year 2

All the children from Year 1 to 6 were asked to complete a spelling challenges grid to encourage them to learn the words from the Key Stage statutory lists.  Year 2 were enthused about the activities, which  included using technology, building word pyramids and making up jokes using their spelling words.

Spelling Bee in Year 3

Before the Spelling Bee, each class took part in a series of carousel activities to excite and prepare them for the competition. Year 3 played games such as Bananagrams (pictured) to test their speed and knowledge of spelling patterns as well as using Spelling Shed to practise their accuracy.

Spelling Bee Finalists in UKS2

The top spellers in Year 5 and 6 took part in the Thamesmead Cluster Spelling Bee. To prepare, the children joined a showbie spelling bee club to practise the statutory words by completing a range of challenges such as finding words within their spelling words and writing definitions for the words. On the day of competition, the confident spellers made it through seven rounds and were delighted to come in third place.
