Answering Scientific Questions

This term children have been using different enquiry types to answer scientific questions about the world around them, through the use of enquiry skills. These include identifying, classifying and grouping, observing over time, research using secondary resources, pattern seeking and comparative and fair testing.

Chicks in Reception!

Children in Reception have been exploring the natural world around them and learning about life processes. They found out all about the life cycle of a duck. In class they watched the ducklings hatch, made first-hand observations and drew pictures of the ducklings.

Growing Plants in Year 2

In Year 2 children have been learning about ‘Plants’. They have been using enquiry skills to carry out observations over time. They planned an investigation thinking about different conditions to set the plants up in. They then made predictions before observing the plants over a space of time, recorded their findings and made conclusions.

Animals including Humans in Year 4

In Year 4’s topic ‘Animals, including humans’, children have been learning all about the functions of the organs within the digestive system. They asked relevant questions, observed a demonstration of the digestion process and drew conclusions from this. They then used enquiry skill - researching using secondary sources to answer any further questions they had.

Comparative Tests in Year 6

Year 6 have been learning all about the topic ‘Light’. During the topic they have used enquiry skills to carry out a comparative test to understand the relationship between the incident ray and reflected ray of light. They then used their results to draw conclusions, suggested improvements and raised further questions.
