Investigating and Exploring in DT

Below are examples from the children of their investigating and exploring within DT. The investigating is a successful part of the curriculum outcome and contributes positively towards children’s understanding of what makes a successful, purposeful, innovative and functional design.

Early exploration of materials in Nursery

In nursery the children have been exploring textures during free flow activities. They are encouraged to feel, observe and comment on the different materials they encounter. With the support of the nursery staff children are starting to develop their understanding and vocabulary by commenting on what they are doing.

Researching ship designs in Year 2

In Year 2 children have been investigating different types of boats. To help them design and make the most suitable boat that could carry fruit, children had to test different types of materials. This enabled children to find the most suitable.

Exploration of design through breads in Year 3

In Year 3 children investigated different types of bread. Children were able to taste different types of bread, compare the differences in smell, texture and appearance as well as consider the most appropriate style of bread for the user, purpose and audience. The investigation process enabled children to consider their own design choices, function and purpose.

Make it stand out

Research and Development on bags in Year 6

As part of Year 6’s DT textiles project they have been exploring different types of bags, who they are suitable for and what their purpose was. Then they looked at a bag in more detail. They investigated the stitching, side pockets, handle and colour. Thereby enabling children a greater understanding about how to make a functional and purposeful bag.
